2027 U.S. Targhee Sheep Association Starter Flock Program
The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association (USTSA) is proud to announce the 2027 Starter Flock Program!
This initiative is designed to promote the growth and visibility of the Targhee breed while fostering youth involvement and education in the sheep industry.
Program Overview & Purpose
The goal of the Starter Flock Program is to help an aspiring young shepherd establish their own flock of registered Targhee sheep. By providing high-quality foundation genetics and experienced mentorship, the USTSA aims to empower the next generation of agricultural leaders.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the 2027 Starter Flock Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
-
Youth between 10 and 15 years of age as of January 1, 2027.
-
Immediate family must not currently raise registered Targhee sheep.
The Award Package
The winning applicant will receive:
-
Starter Flock of Three (3) Ewes: Includes at least one (1) ewe lamb donated by USTSA members. All sheep will meet strict Targhee breed standards: registered with the USTSA, side micron of less than 24.94, and QR scrapie codon 171 genotype.
-
$500 Minimum Buyer Credit: Donated by the USTSA for purchasing additional sheep at the 2027 USTSA National Show & Sale.
-
Dedicated Mentorship: Guidance and ongoing support from an active USTSA member.
The award will be presented at the 2027 USTSA National Show & Sale held July 15–17, 2027, in Manti, Utah. Attendance at the National Show & Sale is mandatory for the winner, who will also be eligible and encouraged to participate in the National Junior Showmanship Competition!
Selection Process
Applications with supporting materials will be reviewed by the USTSA Starter Flock Committee. Selected candidates will participate in a primary Zoom interview (device with camera access required) and a potential farm visit by USTSA members.
